Karen and RJ Tolodziecki have made their home on the Garden Island for the last 16 years. As dog parents, they were aware of the lack of options when it came to boarding their own
4-legged kids. As members of the Dog Fanciers of Kauai (a local dog obedience club), they learned they were not alone in their concerns.
With this in mind – the idea for Bark! Bark! BackYard was born. With an eye to not only filling a gap, they expanded their boarding idea to include daycare and private training.
While Karen & RJ have gotten most of their hands-on experience with their own dogs, Karen has also studied with other experts in the field. In 2014, she trained under Cesar Millan (the Dog Whisperer himself!) and successfully completed his Dog Behavior and Training workshop at his Dog Psychology Center in California. In 2015 she further honed her skills with an intensive weeklong shadow-program with Heather Beck (one of Millan's lead trainers and herself a 25 year expert in conducting large group dog socials).
Karen has continued honing her teaching style by helping to conduct large group obedience classes in assistance with Newton Young and the Dog Fanciers of Kauai (a local island group dedicated to creating "good island dogs"). "Finding an effective way to communicate to humans what you need them to communicate to their dogs is always the challenge. The top of the the leash is more challenging than the bottom half ."
Chef RJ's expertise is in the area of feeding/nutrition. With over 25 years restaurant experience, Chef brings his passion for food to the dogs in BBBY's care. Ensuring dogs have the right amount and type of food, and that they eat while in boarding are his chief concerns.
Karen and RJ's main objective remains bringing new vision and innovation to Kauai in regards to understanding our favorite (and often misunderstood) family member.
"We are excited to be able to provide knowledge, options and real solutions to the dog loving folks of Kauai!"
